Carolina MORENO (Le Mans Université) présentera un papier intitulé Dynamics of inequalities and economic crisis: The role of transfers on income inequalities co-écrit avec François LANGOT (Le Mans Université).

Abstract: Inequalities have increased over the past thirty years in US, especially after the sub-prime crisis. This has lead literature to focus on the top of income and wealth distributions. In this paper, we show that it is also important to study the other part of the income distribution, which brought us to study a component of income that has been neglected on the literature. Nonetheless, it is protagonist when proposing public policy: the transfers. We use SCF data to understand the role of Transfers on Income Inequalities for the United States. We establish that Transfers reduce inequalities via two mechanisms: its size and its shape (its pure redistributive effect). We conclude that United States damped income inequalities after the sub-prime crisis thanks to a transitory increase of transfers size, but also by implementing more redistributive transfers.  The individuals have also answered to the crisis by deciding to get their pensions having a direct, thus modifying the dynamics of inequalities.
